Event Details

Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Movement and initial developer of the GNU operating system, explores our digital soceity, looking into how "inclusivity" online is shaped and why without a free, fair and just digital world, this process is not necessarily a good thing.

If we are working towards creating a more inclusive online society, Stallman argues it needs to be without the burden of unfair principles, that are founded on mere "practical convenience".

However, if we also judge in terms of human rights, whether digital inclusion is good or bad depends on what kind of digital world we are to be included in. Stallan argues that, if we wish to work towards digital inclusion as a goal, it must ensure it is the good kind.

But what is that good kind of digital world? Richard Stallman explains.

Richard Stallman launched the free software movement in 1983 and started the development of the GNU operating system in 1984. GNU is free software: everyone has the freedom to copy it and redistribute it, with or without changes. The GNU/Linux system, basically the GNU operating system with Linux added, is used on tens of millions of computers today. Stallman has received the ACM Grace Hopper Award, a MacArthur Foundation fellowship, the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Pioneer Award, and the the Takeda Award for Social/Economic Betterment, as well as several honorary doctorates.

Open Rights Group

The digital age is transforming society: bringing us greater democracy, transparency and new creative possibilities. When these freedoms are under attack, the Open Rights Group is there to defend them. Founded in 2005 by 1,000 digital activists, ORG has become the UK’s leading voice defending freedom of expression, privacy, innovation, consumer rights and creativity on the net.

Getting into the political trenches in the UK and EU, we mobilise our supporters to stop bad laws. Working closely with other campaign groups, we lobby government and talk to the media whenever our rights are threatened.

ORG is a non-profit company funded by donors, mostly by people like you. We depend on regular contributions to run and win our campaigns.
